While handling the bio-medical waste staff should protect themselves from getting and acquring infection or injured by needle stick.

*Protective clothing must be worn at all times when handling biomedical waste.
*The protective aids are as follows

Categories of Bio-Medical Waste
*Categories 1: Human Anatomical waste(Body parts, Organs, Human tissues etc.)
*Categories 2: Animal Waste(animal tissues,organs, body parts carcasses, bleeding parts, fluid, blood and experimental animals used in research, waste generated by veterinary hospitals, colleges)
*Categories 3: Microbiology & Biotechnology Waste(Wastes from laboratory cultures, stocks or micro-organisms live or attenuated vaccines,infectious agents from research, wastes from production of biologicals, toxins, dishes and devices used for transfer of cultures)
*Categories 4: Waste Shapes(needles, syringes, scalpels, blade, glass,etc.That includes both used and unused sharps)
*Categories 5: Discarded Medicines and Cytotoxic drugs (Waste comprising of outdated,contaminated and discarded Medicines)
*Categories 6: Soiled Waste(Items contaminated with blood,and body fluids including cotton,dressings, soiled plaster casts, line, beddings, other material contaminatd with blood)
*Categories 7: Soild Waste(Waste generated from disposable items other than the waste sharps such as tubings, catheters, intravenous sets etc)
*Categories 8: Liquid Wast(Waste generated from laboratory and washing, cleaning, housekeeping and disinfection activities)
*Categories 9: Incineration ash(Ash from incineration of any bio-medical waste)
*Categories 10: Chemical waste(Chemicals used in production of biologicals, chemical used in disinfection, as insecticides, etc.)

Segregation of waste
*Segregation is the essence of waste management and should be done at the source be done at the source of generation of bio-medical waste
*The responsibility of segregation should be with the generator of biomedical waste i.e. doctors, nurses, technicians etc. (medical and paramedical personnel)
*The biomedical waste should be segregated as per categories mentioned in the rules.
